Grant Thornton
The goal was a workplace that’s inclusive, engaging, and environmentally responsible - without losing its soul
When Grant Thornton set out to reimagine their Liverpool office, the vision was clear: reduce footprint, boost flexibility, and do it all sustainably. Staying put in the iconic Grade I-listed Liver Building, the firm teamed up with Claremont to transform the space into something that felt both grounded in local culture and fit for a future-focused, global team. The goal was a workplace that’s inclusive, engaging, and environmentally responsible - without losing its soul.
Rather than gutting and starting over, Claremont embraced the power of reuse. Using their in-house carbon calculator, they made strategic design choices that led to a 22.5% carbon saving. 65% of existing furniture stayed. Security doors were reborn as statement ceiling rafts. Old perch desks now live on as dining tables. From refurbished legs to fresh desk surfaces made with sustainable materials, every detail was an opportunity to reduce waste and add meaning.
Zoned for both buzz and calm, the layout cleverly uses the building’s natural light, placing energised social spaces at the edges, whilst quieter zones hold the centre. There’s a retreat for moments of pause, a town hall for team connection, and a deeply personal space dedicated to Ellie, a beloved team member, now remembered through creative, heartfelt touches. This is a workplace shaped by, and for, the people who use it.
To set the tone the moment you step in, Spacestor’s Palisades II creates a striking welcome arch. Built with curved grid and filled with shelving, planter boxes, mycelium panels and curved ply, the zoning frames Grant Thornton logos and the whole reception with warmth and intention. Palisades II creates a threshold that says: this is a space with purpose, personality, and people at its heart.
